Drawing Foundations: An 8-Week Course for Ages 16+

Discover the essentials of drawing in a supportive, hands-on class. Over 8 weeks, you’ll learn line work, shading, perspective, composition, and figure drawing while building your own creative style. Perfect for beginners or those looking to strengthen their skills.

  • Final project and group showcase at the end of the course

Format: In-person, 1 night per week (Thursday), 2 hours each session (7 - 9pm)

  • Build foundational drawing skills with pencil and charcoal

  • Strengthen observation and hand-eye coordination

  • Learn shading, proportion, and composition techniques

  • Develop personal style and confidence in artistic expression

  • Complete a final project to showcase individual progress

Weekly Breakdown

  • Week 1 – Introduction & Line Fundamentals

  • Icebreaker: quick gesture drawings

  • Materials overview (pencils, sketchbook, erasers, charcoal)

  • Warm-ups: contour lines, blind contour drawing

  • Homework: 5 contour studies of objects at home
     

  • Week 2 – Shape, Form & Proportion

  • Breaking objects into basic shapes

  • Understanding proportion (objects, still life)

  • Exercises: drawing from simple geometric forms → objects

  • Homework: sketch 3 household objects with shape breakdown
     

  • Week 3 – Value & Shading

  • Light source, value scale (0–10)

  • Shading techniques: hatching, cross-hatching, blending, stippling

  • Still life shading practice

  • Homework: shaded study of fruit or object with a strong light source
     

  • Week 4 – Perspective & Space

  • One-point and two-point perspective

  • Atmospheric perspective (foreground vs. background)

  • Exercises: drawing a simple room or street corner

  • Homework: sketch an interior space from life
     

  • Week 5 – Composition & Balance

  • Rule of thirds, focal point, leading lines

  • Arranging objects in a still life for dynamic balance

  • Group activity: collaborative composition drawing

  • Homework: create thumbnail sketches testing different compositions
     

  • Week 6 – Figure Drawing Basics

  • Gesture drawing (2–5 min poses)

  • Basic anatomy and proportion of the human body

  • Practice: mannequin forms, simplified figures

  • Homework: draw 5 figures from reference (photos or people-watching sketches)
     

  • Week 7 – Expressive Drawing & Personal Style

  • Experiment with charcoal, ink, mixed media

  • Looking at artists with distinct drawing styles (e.g., Egon Schiele, Georgia O’Keeffe, Kehinde Wiley sketches)

  • Exercises: expressive portrait or abstract line drawing

  • Homework: draft ideas for final project
     

  • Week 8 – Final Project & Showcase

  • Students create a finished drawing incorporating skills learned (self-portrait, detailed still life, or imaginative scene)

  • Group critique & celebration

  • Optional showcase for friends/family

  • 9x12" sketchbook

  • Set of drawing pencils (2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B)

  • Kneaded eraser & white eraser

  • Charcoal sticks/pencils

  • Blending stumps/tissues
